Summer of Justice – 2008

AUGUST CINE LIBRE
A release screening for Youth Encuentro Film. Thursday, August 7th, 6pm – Arts for Action Office (4225 Saviers Road, Suite 2, Oxnard, 93033). Snacks and coffee will be served.

On May 24th, youth from Filmore to Santa Maria (and everywhere in between) participated in workshops about the use of media and arts in community empowerment. Three panels of open wall were installed at the Youth Encuentro for participants to express themselves freely, safely and wildly. The day ended with a concert featuring Olmeca, Cihuatl-Ce, Awol Star, Comandante Tazumal, Madusa, the Bent Vinyl Crew, Cross, and Spinoby. The whole day was documented by a team of youth participants in the hands-on video production workshop. This is the story of a day of beautifully and creative chaos!

ARTS FOR ACTION PRESENTS THE FAMILY POWER PROJECT
In 2008, Arts for Action was contracted by the Cabrillo Economic Development Corporation to produce a short film documenting the Family Power Project – Oxnard residents identified causes of community violence and developed policy suggestions for violence prevention. Through this work, A4A gained insight into the systemic nature of community violence in Oxnard. We learned that community violence is a symptom of social inequity – unequal access to the tools of cultural production and educational and cultural resources.

We believe that sustainable solutions to community violence are those that provide positive outlets for cultural community-based expression.

Peep out the Family Power Project Film to hear more about the struggle for solutions through community voice.

HALACO MURAL AT JULY 17TH ACTION.
On July 17th, your hard work and artistic expression went into action at the South Oxnard Halaco meeting. The mobile mural was erected at Mary Star of the Sea Hall. It gave vision to toxic issues at the Halaco Site. Young artists were present to explain and receive love for their hard work.
